When Zenitsu finally confronts Kaigaku during the Infinity Castle arc, the fight is not simply about killing a demon—it’s about avenging their master and proving that Jigoro’s teachings were not in vain. Kaigaku immediately lashes out with techniques of Thunder Breathing, his body enhanced by demonic power. Each strike crackles with intensity, showing the terrifying fusion of Thunder Breathing with a demon’s regenerative abilities. Kaigaku mocks Zenitsu, claiming that he is superior in every way. He ridicules Zenitsu for being weak, a coward, and unworthy of being Jigoro’s successor.
But Zenitsu, for perhaps the first time, does not crumble under the weight of insults. Instead, he channels his grief, rage, and sense of duty into battle. What makes this fight extraordinary is Zenitsu’s growth. For much of the series, Zenitsu relied on unconscious combat, entering a trance-like state of bravery only when asleep. But here, he fights fully aware, conscious, and determined. His movements are calm, his will unshaken, and his spirit unyielding. This is not the fearful boy cowering in the shadows—this is the true successor of Jigoro Kuwajima. Though he had mastered the first five forms of Thunder Breathing, he never created anything new, never innovated, and instead leaned on brute strength. Zenitsu, however, surprises him with something Kaigaku never anticipated—a technique of his own making: Thunder Breathing, Seventh Form: Honoikazuchi no Kami (Flaming Thunder God). This move is a testament to Zenitsu’s growth and creativity, an evolution beyond what Kaigaku or even their master could achieve. In the end, Zenitsu vs Kaigaku is more than a fight between two swordsmen. It is a tragic yet triumphant story of legacy, betrayal, and redemption.
