Brook, the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates, is one of the most unique and intriguing characters in One Piece. With his skeletal appearance, gentlemanly mannerisms, and quirky humor, Brook is a soul revived through the powers of the Revive-Revive Fruit (Yomi Yomi no Mi). Despite his comical look and lighthearted personality, Brook’s story is marked by profound themes of loneliness, loyalty, and the desire to reunite with his lost companions.
Brook’s life began as a swordsman and musician for the Rumbar Pirates, a carefree crew known for spreading joy wherever they went. He served as the crew’s musician, a vital role for the pirates as they believed in the power of music to lift spirits even in the darkest times. Brook’s skill as a musician and his refined, gentlemanly manners made him popular, but his deep loyalty to his crewmates was his defining trait. This loyalty was tested when the crew was attacked by a powerful enemy in the Grand Line, resulting in a battle they could not survive. Though they fought valiantly, the crew eventually succumbed to poison, knowing that death was inevitable.
However, Brook had consumed the Revive-Revive Fruit, a Devil Fruit that would allow his soul to return to his body after death—though he had no way of knowing how lonely and difficult this journey would be. Upon his death, Brook’s soul returned to find his body, but by the time he located it, it had decomposed into a skeleton. Revived as a “living skeleton,” Brook was physically alive but emotionally devastated. He wandered alone on the crew’s ship, the Flying Dutchman, for decades, haunted by memories of his friends and tormented by isolation in the shadowy waters of the Florian Triangle.

Brook had promised Laboon that they would return after exploring the Grand Line, and the thought of fulfilling that promise became his sole purpose. Brook’s reunion with the world occurs when he meets the Straw Hat Pirates in Thriller Bark, where he initially appears as a quirky, cheerful skeleton with a love for jokes and a penchant for asking to see women’s underwear. Despite his lighthearted exterior, he quickly reveals the sorrow and loneliness he has endured.
Luffy invites Brook to join the crew, intrigued by his character and fascinated by his unique abilities. Brook’s fighting style combines fencing with his incredible speed, enhanced by his weightlessness as a skeleton. Using his cane sword, “Soul Solid,” and later developing the ability to manipulate his soul, Brook becomes a formidable swordsman. His music also has unique powers, with the ability to put people to sleep or bolster his allies’ resolve, a trait that enhances the Straw Hat crew’s resilience in battle.
During his time with the Straw Hats, Brook grows closer to his new friends, finding a family among them. Brook’s commitment to this promise is tested during the events of the Whole Cake Island arc, where he bravely stands up to the powerful Big Mom and her crew. In a daring and impressive act, Brook manages to steal a copy of Big Mom’s Poneglyph, proving his courage and resourcefulness.
Brook’s Devil Fruit powers evolve, allowing him to project his soul outside his body and perform techniques such as the “Soul Parade.” This power has unique advantages, like making him impervious to certain attacks, but it also allows him to explore the spiritual realm, which he uses to great effect in battle.
