His father worked as a train operator while his mother was a part-time librarian. Endo often credits his mother for sparking his early love for stories, especially Japanese literature and classic films. As a teenager, he became obsessed with the works of Yasujirō Ozu and Hirokazu Kore-eda, admiring their ability to depict deep emotion through silence, framing, and the ordinary.
Endo studied film at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he began experimenting with short films that focused on simple, emotionally-driven narratives. His graduation project, “The Blue Window” (2014), told the story of a reclusive teenager and her bond with a retired schoolteacher. The film was noted for its delicate use of natural lighting and still camera movements, earning praise at student film festivals across Japan.
In 2017, Endo released his first feature-length film, “Somewhere in the Rain,” a quiet drama about two strangers who cross paths during a storm in a rural town. The film, made on a shoestring budget, was celebrated for its authenticity and emotional depth. It gained attention at the Busan International Film Festival, where Endo was applauded as a new talent to watch. Critics praised his unique ability to explore universal themes — such as loneliness, memory, and longing — through a distinctly Japanese lens.
In interviews, Endo has shared that his films are not meant to deliver answers, but rather to ask quiet questions: How do we live with loss? What do we leave unsaid? Where does love go when it fades? His narratives often deal with characters who are disconnected — from others, from themselves, or from their past — and their slow, often unresolved journey toward reconnection.
Despite being part of the indie film movement, Endo has expressed a desire to maintain a close relationship with traditional Japanese values in storytelling. He often incorporates seasonal imagery, cultural rituals, and local dialects, grounding his work deeply in the Japanese experience. His scripts are written with care, often rewritten several times to ensure every line and silence carries meaning.
In 2023, Endo completed his third film, “Light Between the Leaves,” a contemplative piece about an elderly woman reflecting on a life filled with choices both made and missed. The film was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival and was praised for its gentle storytelling and heartfelt performances.
